Why I don't like current AI
What I do not like about current LLM, generative AI, 2023 post ChatGPT era, Gemini, Grok, Copilot.
- Makes contradictions between management and developers - management believes what developer knows is not possible, the gap between business owners and developers becomes even larger
- Price is not set properly - LLM companies loose money on every request and no external expenses are bundled into price, economy of scale is not expected to kick so much as usual
- Environmental impact - we should be more environmentally friendly, consume less power, use less resources, datacenters needed for LLM are direct opposite of this
- Consolidates power - even more power, control and data for few large corporations
- Tech bro culture - high-tech class is good for distruption, but their new models are mostly less secure, more expensive and worse for people and communities
- Build on large scale theft - LLM are trained on all data, music, code without regards to authors, artists
- Problem and solution presented as same thing - AI generated content is an issue and it is sold as a solution to that issue too. "Sure datacenters cause cancer, but maybe AI can cure cancer."
- Generative AI produces slop, that should not be created in a first place - we should not create just because it is easy, code, content, documents that are created because "why not" are junk and liability
- Every software is now wrapper over LLM API and vibecoded React app, where is craftsmanship in that
- Impact on jobs - we should be able to do a good stable job and earn a living, not special extra talented persons, but vast majority of people - replacing jobs with AI does not lead to better future for average human, but only for rich owners
- AI is lying
- Who is responsible for generated code?
- In a long run it will hurt software maintainability.
